Bulgaria Holds Local Elections

My native country is holding local elections today. Mayors of some of the biggest cities such as Sofia, Varna, Stara Zagora, Veliko Tarnovo, Pleven are expected to regain their places. One of the keypoints of elections is could the new populist party of the Sofia Mayor Boiko Borisov, GERB win the proportional vote in municipality councils. IT has already secured the mayoral positions in both larges Bulgarian cities - Sofia and Plovdiv (in coalition with moderate nationalists VMRO).

The socialists from BSP is expected to keep its position as the most influential party in rural areas.

Right wing parties are in better position than they used to be five month ago when they failed to win places in European parliament. Now the main right wing party UDF is expected to win mayoral seats in 2 of the 28 main cities and 4 other candidates to reach second round.

Is America Exceptional?

There is no doubt that America is exceptional. Americans are not the only ones who think this way. There are many reasons to admire America. The United States are the only country among other powerful national states in the world which welcomes anyone to be a part of its nation. Not because someone is American by birth but because they feel American and share the values of the U.S. society.

America however has damaged its own image wordwide within the last couple of year and now needs to rebuild it. To implement a good strategy which would make America to regain its place of the most appreciated nation in the world requires American society to ask itself many questions. One of the most difficult ones for Americans today is how to think of their own country as less exceptional. Why?

Because the exceptionalism might lead to isolation. Do you think that United States has to isolate themselves from other nations and societies? My answers is simple - “No”.

There is a brilliant article by Fareed Zakaria in this week’s Newsweek titled “The End of Exceptionalism“. Read it to get Zakaria’s viewpoint about American exceptionalism.
